Hiking
Mountain trails around Bortziriak, the valley where Etxalar stands, through which the River Bidasoa runs. The Señorío de Bertiz Nature Park is 25 km away, with the option of guided tours. In the same area, the Leurtza reservoirs. In Erratzu, outings to the Xorroxin waterfall.
Bicycle trails
The Bidasoa greenway. 40 km practically on the level, along a former train track. Bike rental in Doneztebe. In the same area, the Elgorriaga spa. For adventure sports, IrriSarri Land in Igantzi.
The Baztán
You can reach this famous valley by following the main road from Olagaraia. The Zugarramurdi Caves, the site of witches' covens in the 17th century, and the Witch Museum, are 17 km away. Another similar choice of outing would be the Sara caves, in the French town of Sare.
Chillida Leku
In Hernani, the museum dedicated to the sculptor Eduardo Chillida, which reopened in 2019. The works are divided between the gardens and woodland, and the Zabalaga farmhouse. Another cultural option is the Museum Balenciaga, dedicated to the fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga and opened in 2011 in his birthplace of Getaria.
San Sebastian
San Sebastian, 40 kilometres away, needs no introduction. The Cantabrian coast is also home to Zumaia and the Flysch rock formations, with the option of guided tours by boat, as well as Zarautz and Getaria. The French Basque Country offers further possible day trips, to San Juan de Luz and Biarritz.
Beaches
Olagaraia is set amid a mountain landscape, but the Cantabrian coastline is just 20 minutes away by car. Hondarribia and Hendaia are the closest beaches. Surfing in Zarautz and Biarritz, paddle surfing in Getaria. The closest option for a swim can be reached on foot: the river in Etxalar.
